Come to the Table Meal

Every fourth Wednesday of the month, The Somerville Food Security Coalition runs a free meal in East Somerville for the broader Somerville community called “Come To The Table.” Come to the Table is a volunteer run meal, and the meal has become a great opportunity for us to serve and build relationships with those in our community. If you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch with Josh Henderson

The mission of the Somerville Homeless Coalition is to provide homeless and near homeless individuals and families with individualized supportive services and tailored housing solutions with a goal of obtaining and maintaining affordable housing.

Every year, tens of thousands of international students arrive in the Boston metro area. Almost one third of those students come from the People’s Republic of China, helping make Chinese students the largest percentage of international students in America. Reports show that though many of these Chinese students are quickly able to connect with their fellow countrymen, they are largely isolated from the surrounding American communities. Surveys have demonstrated that compared to other international student communities, Chinese international students come to America with the highest relational expectations and leave the most disappointed with the cross-cultural relationships they experienced.

China Outreach Ministries (COM), a nationwide Christian ministry, believes that it is the responsibility of the local church to help fill the gap between these students' expectations and their experiences with the love of Jesus Christ. We believe that we are called to welcome all Chinese students and to serve them holistically in whatever areas they feel need. We offer assistance through a variety of avenues, for example, helping needs through English assistance, relational needs through friendship, or spiritual needs through open and pressure-free exploration of the person of Jesus.

Hannah and Trey Nation are COM’s Boston metro area staff and operate locally under the name China Friends Cambridge. Hannah previously lived in China and has worked with Chinese students since 2005. They believe one of their primary responsibilities is to help equip the local church to understand the Chinese international student community and empower it to reach out in meaningful ways. Because the work of sharing Christ is not the task of individuals, but rather the responsibility of the community of believers, the Nations are always looking for local volunteers!
